2026 05 14 Community Foundation Grant for Summer Math and Literacy

LDSB Receives $25,000 Grant to Support Elementary Summer Learning

The Limestone District School Board (LDSB) has received a $25,000 grant through the Community Foundation for Kingston and Area’s Community Grants Program in support of its Elementary Summer Literacy and Math Program.The three-week program supports Limestone students finishing Senior Kindergarten to Grade 3 by strengthening foundational skills in reading, writing, and mathematics to help set students up for success in the following school year.Grant funding will be used to purchase literacy and math learning resources and to create family engagement packages. These take-home resources are designed to support learning at home and encourage families to engage in literacy and math activities alongside their students.The LDSB is grateful to the Community Foundation for Kingston and Area for their generous support, helping students across the district access this important summer learning opportunity.

As we cruise into this 3-day weekend, the weather looks delightful and spring is springing! We had Hawks learning both indoors and outdoors this week and we have lots of updates to share. Enjoy!Long Weekend Reminder As a reminder, Monday May 18th is a public holiday and the school will be closed. See you on Tuesday!Njacko Backo ConcertsToday, all students enjoyed a concert put on by a bilingual artist from Cameroon! Njacko Backo performed songs and dances in both French and English during an interactive concert for our K-3 and 4-8 classes. Students and staff alike got to enjoy singing, dancing and playing instruments during the event. This process involves months of observation and understanding about academic and social learning. In June, all staff get together and add insight into each child's placement, including academics, peer groups, dynamics, etc. Should parents/guardians have information they feel is key when placing their child, they are invited to submit remarks or requests to brennanka@limestone.on.ca. While requests are not guaranteed, we may use information from families to support decision making. If you are able to contribute, baked goods can be dropped off at the school gym doors between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. To help with serving and safety, we kindly ask that items be individually wrapped whenever possible. If drop-off is a challenge, volunteer pick-up may be arranged. We have been enjoying the outdoors, soaking up the rays and enjoying watching the trees slowly turn green. This process involves months of observation and understanding about academic and social learning. In June, all staff get together and add insight into each child's placement, including academics, peer groups, dynamics, etc. Should parents/guardians have information they feel is key when placing their child, they are invited to submit remarks or requests to brennanka@limestone.on.ca. While requests are not guaranteed, we may use information from families to support decision making. The deadline for submitting a class placement request is Friday May 29th.Track and Field Day What a day! The weather cooperated and students had a blast participating in a variety of fun outdoor athletic activities. During this week, our Belong and Believe students will help spread awareness about mental health and the importance of feeling connected, included, and supported at school.This year’s national theme is “Come Together, Canada – Stronger Connections. Better Mental Health.” This theme reminds us that positive relationships, belonging, and connection play an important role in student well‑being.Throughout the week, students will take part in:<ul class="editor-list-ul"><li value="1" class="editor-listitem">School and grade‑level assemblies</li><li value="2" class="editor-listitem">Classroom activities focused on mental health</li><li value="3" class="editor-listitem">Student‑led discussions about kindness, inclusion, and support</li><li value="4" class="editor-listitem">Opportunities to learn how to ask for help and support others</li></ul>Our goal is to raise awareness, encourage open conversations, and help break the stigma around mental health. By coming together as a school community, we can help all students feel seen, valued, and supported.We look forward to a meaningful Mental Health Week and appreciate the care and leadership our students show in supporting one another.Road Races The Bayridge Road Race happened this week and it was a lot of fun! Over 100 Hawks participated and it was amazing to see the sea of green! Mme Gallupe, Mme Martin, Mme MacKay, and Mme Fournier have been cheering them on every step of the way.The LCVI Road Race will take place on Wednesday, May 6. This was the first full week in nearly a month so we suspect Hawks may be feeling tired this weekend :) We continue to bring forward fun events, valuable learning and cooperative education. Please see updates below. Track and Field Day We are pleased to let families know that Thursday April 30th is Henderson Track and Field Fun Day for Grades 3+. This day involves a rotation of outdoor stations to keep students active, as well as exposing students to new and old track activities. Please be sure students bring weather-appropriate clothing. Should the forecast be very rainy, the rain date will be Friday May 1st. We look forward to sharing photos with you!Learning Commons Updates We have noticed an increase in books being returned wet. We know it's been a rainy spring but ask families help in ensuring books are sent to school in a dry section of the backpack. Upcoming Family Engagement and Climate Survey

The Limestone District School Board is inviting families to take part in the Family Engagement and Climate Survey. This survey gives families an opportunity to share their experiences with their student’s school and with the school board.The feedback helps us understand what is working well and where we can improve. It also supports schools and school councils in building welcoming, safe, and supportive school communities.The survey includes questions about:<ul class="editor-list-ul"><li value="1" class="editor-listitem">How schools communicate and share information</li><li value="2" class="editor-listitem">Whether families feel welcome, included, and connected</li><li value="3" class="editor-listitem">Barriers to taking part in school activities, such as time, childcare, language, accessibility, or cost</li><li value="4" class="editor-listitem">Safety and bullying, including reporting and follow‑up</li><li value="5" class="editor-listitem">Licensed Before and After School Programs, including questions to help inform future planning</li><li value="6" class="editor-listitem">Some questions ask about family background to help us better understand different experiences across our communities</li></ul>Participation is voluntary and anonymous. Day – Friday, April 17A reminder to families that tomorrow, Friday, April 17, is a P.A. Day. There will be no classes for students, and we look forward to welcoming them back to school on Monday.Family Engagement and Climate Survey – Coming in MayIn early May, Limestone will be inviting families to take part in a Family Engagement and Climate Survey. The optional survey is anonymous, and families can choose which questions they want to answer.The survey asks about topics such as feeling connected to school, family involvement, safety and bullying, communication, before- and after-school programming, and how technology like artificial intelligence is used in schools.The feedback shared through this survey helps schools and the school board understand what is working well, what could improve, and what may make it harder for some families to take part. An overview of the Student Census 2025 was presented to the Board of Trustees at last night’s board meeting. We are very excited to showcase our talents for you. The school was buzzing with excitement, with the warmer weather and long weekend ahead. We continue to be impressed with the hard work our Hawks are putting in every day. We are so fortunate to be a part of this community. With the arrival of April, there are lots of exciting events on the go. Please be sure to read the newsletter weekly to keep updated. Long Weekend Reminder As a reminder, JR Henderson is closed tomorrow, Friday April 3rd, as well as Monday April 6th. We look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday April 7th. As well, April 17th is a PD Day and there is no school for students. Autism Awareness Day - We All Shine Differently - Linked by Our Strengths On Thursday April 2nd, Henderson celebrated World Autism Day. Not only today but everyday we engage in conversations around the importance of differences and celebrating our individual strengths. Today, we created a display board and a whole-school paperchain. When we link our strengths together, we create a beautiful display of diverse talents in our school. This school-wide activity helps us understand and include everyone -including friends who may think, learn, or experience the world differently.
