Message from the Director

Dear Families,As we enter the spring season and final third of the school year, we are reminded of this season’s promise of renewal and growth, and the key role schools and families have together in supporting student learning and well-being. This time of <a href="about:blank" class="editor-link">year</a> brings many opportunities for learning both inside and outside of the classroom, along with the return of outdoor extracurricular activities. While this week has been very wet and rainy, the warmer temperatures of spring are upon us.  I would like to take this opportunity to share a few important updates with you:P.A. Day – Friday, April 17A reminder to families that tomorrow, Friday, April 17, is a P.A. Day. There will be no classes for students, and we look forward to welcoming them back to school on Monday.Family Engagement and Climate Survey – Coming in MayIn early May, Limestone will be inviting families to take part in a Family Engagement and Climate Survey. The optional survey is anonymous, and families can choose which questions they want to answer.The survey asks about topics such as feeling connected to school, family involvement, safety and bullying, communication, before- and after-school programming, and how technology like artificial intelligence is used in schools.The feedback shared through this survey helps schools and the school board understand what is working well, what could improve, and what may make it harder for some families to take part. Your feedback helps strengthen communication, support student well-being, and improve school experiences for everyone.More information will be shared leading up to the survey being live in early May. <a href="https://youtu.be/kKxSsDtggew" class="editor-link">Families are encouraged to watch a short video</a> featuring Senior Staff and a Parent Involvement Committee (PIC) Co-Chair, who share more about the Family Engagement and Climate Survey and why family voice is so important.Human Rights InformationLaunched in October 2022, the Limestone’s Student Human Rights Reporting Tool provides a way for students, families, caregivers, and staff to report human rights concerns involving LDSB students, including matters related to discrimination and harassment. Reviewing and analyzing this information helps support safe, welcoming, and inclusive school environments and supports the board’s obligations under the Ontario Human Rights Code. The <a href="https://www.limestone.on.ca/documents/dff6803b-6f2d-4d36-a758-68758a63ceb3/2026-04-09-Student-Human-Rights-Data-Summary-for-2024-2025.pdf?fingerprint=ppb20260409164623" class="editor-link">Student Human Rights Reports – 2024-2025 Summary is now available online</a> and can be accessed by families. Student Census 2025 UpdateIn November 2025, Limestone completed the See Yourself in Limestone: Student Census 2025, a voluntary and confidential survey that helps us better understand students’ identities and school experiences. The findings support planning and decision-making that promotes equity, well being, and student success across Limestone schools. An overview of the Student Census 2025 was presented to the Board of Trustees at last night’s board meeting. Families are encouraged to <a href="https://www.limestone.on.ca/news/see-yourself-in-limestone-2025-student-census-update-20260416133605" class="editor-link">visit the Limestone District School Board website to review the full Student Census summary</a> and learn more about how student voice is helping shape our work. Mental Health Supports Available for StudentsIn response to tragic events, locally or globally, students may experience a wide range of emotions, including sadness, confusion, worry, or questions about what they may be hearing from others. Students may react in different ways depending on their age, experiences, and how connected they feel to the situation. With time, reassurance, and support from caring adults, these reactions often ease.We encourage families to keep lines of communication open at home, to invite questions, and to offer reassurance as needed. This week was filled with love, celebration, learning and fun. We were blown away by the donations that were made to the food bank, as well as the outstanding turnout and support at our 2nd annual Spring Concert. PD Day Reminder Tomorrow, Friday April 17th is a PD Day and there is no school for students. Give 30 Food Drive The donations this year were beyond appreciated! Your support in helping our community make a difference is remarkable. Way to go, Hawks! As we cruise into the sunshine, please enjoy the updates below. Spring Concert Reminder We are almost there! As a reminder, our Spring Concert series is next week. We are very excited to showcase our talents for you. The schedule is as follows: Tuesday April 14th - Kindergarten concert at 2pm Wednesday April 15th - Grade 1 to 3 Spring concert at 2pm Thursday April 16th - Grade 4 to 8 Spring concert at 2pmFamilies are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item as a donation for entry.For dismissal, students cannot be collected from the office. All classes will immediately proceed to their normal dismissal spot following the concert, should families wish to pick up their children before the dismissal bell. Give 30 Food Drive For the third year running, the Henderson community will be supporting the Give 30 campaign. The Give 30 campaign raises awareness about the local foodbank while also showing students that small ideas can lead to big successes! Our student leaders are helping to educate the community about food insecurity while doing something great within Kingston. As part of our collection, we are encouraging students to bring food items to school. To complete CPIC requests through Kingston Police services, wait times can be long (months) so please ensure you plan ahead if you are interested in volunteering for upcoming trips. The school was buzzing with excitement, with the warmer weather and long weekend ahead. We continue to be impressed with the hard work our Hawks are putting in every day. Long Weekend Reminder As a reminder, JR Henderson is closed tomorrow, Friday April 3rd, as well as Monday April 6th. We look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday April 7th. As well, April 17th is a PD Day and there is no school for students. Autism Awareness Day - We All Shine Differently - Linked by Our Strengths On Thursday April 2nd, Henderson celebrated World Autism Day. Not only today but everyday we engage in conversations around the importance of differences and celebrating our individual strengths. Today, we created a display board and a whole-school paperchain. When we link our strengths together, we create a beautiful display of diverse talents in our school. This school-wide activity helps us understand and include everyone -including friends who may think, learn, or experience the world differently. Join us from 5pm to 7pm for lots of excitement and laughs.Grade 8 Graduation - Save the Date We are pleased to announce our Grade 8 Graduation date. Graduation for Grade 8s will be held on Monday June 22nd. It will take place in the Henderson gymnasium. Doors will open at 4:30pm and the ceremony starts at 5pm. Following this, there will be a boat cruise. Students must arrive by 7:30pm downtown for an 8pm to 10pm sail. Grade 6 Celebration of Learning - Save the Date We are also pleased to announce our Grade 6 Celebration of Learning date and time. This will take place in the Henderson gymnasium on Tuesday June 23rd. Doors will open at 4:30pm and the ceremony starts at 5pm. The celebration will last approximately 40 minutes, then students are free to leave with their families. March Break is almost here, bringing a chance to slow down, recharge, and spend time with family. With the rain arriving, we can also feel spring beginning to make its way in. At school, learning continues to be our focus. Our students and staff remain engaged and committed each day, and we’re proud of the great learning happening in classrooms across the school. Today’s newsletter highlights some of the wonderful work taking place at Henderson.Dressing for the Weather Please ensure Hawks are dressed for the weather, as the yard is muddy and puddles are aplenty. If you require any outdoor gear, please email jrhen@limestone.on.ca and we would happily send home clean items home. We have lots to share - splash pants, snow pants, spring jackets ad more. March Break Reminder As a reminder, Henderson will be closed from March 16th to March 20th for March Break. See you back at Henderson on Monday March 23rd. We wish all families a safe, restful, and enjoyable March Break.Book Character Day - Thursday March 12th On Thursday, March 12th we held our annual ‘Dress as Your Favourite Book Character Day’!  We were beyond impressed with the outstanding costumes. Judging was no easy feat. Indigenous Learning Many classes worked with our Indigenous teacher, Gillianne Mundell looking at Moon of the Crusted Snow teachings. We sampled winter medicines made into teas, smudged using sage and learned the story of gijigijiaaneshiinh (chickadee) and the tamarack and cedar trees. We ended our time felting beautiful birds. Connor will talk with our students about his journey as a Kingston athlete - from the Henderson area! - who went on to play sport at the professional level. He will share his story, goal setting, and then get on the court for some basketball skills. More photos to come after March Break!Sincere Thanks! We sold 210 bags of popcorn for this year's IST popcorn fundraiser. We truly appreciate your support! Monday raised from this fundraiser will go towards purchasing educational materials for our students with complex learning needs. Limestone District School Board Welcomes 2026–2027 Student Trustees

The Limestone District School Board (LDSB) is pleased to announce the appointment of its 2026–2027 Student Trustees, who will be formally welcomed at the April meeting of the Board.Student trustees play an important role in bringing student perspectives to board-level discussions, helping ensure that student voice is reflected in decision-making across the district. Limestone DSB Schools to Participate in Kingston Community Climate Action Fund FoodCycler Project

Limestone District School Board schools will participate in this year’s Kingston Community Climate Action Fund (KCCAF) initiative, supported by the City of Kingston and led by Sustainable Kingston. The project aims to turn everyday school lunch waste into meaningful climate action by introducing FoodCyclers in five to seven local elementary schools, with the long-term goal of securing a unit for each elementary school across the City of Kingston. These units will complement existing food-based programming and serve as an additional hands-on learning tool for students.The initiative will help divert organic waste from student snacks and lunches away from landfill. On Thursday March 12th, we will be doing our second annual IST (intensive support room) popcorn fundraiser. Monday raised from this fundraiser will go towards purchasing educational materials for our students with complex learning needs. For just $2.50 per bag, you can enjoy a tasty treat while helping us purchase essential supplies that support communication, sensory needs, hands‑on learning, and meaningful engagement for our students. The item is available for purchase on School Day and the final day to purchase is Tuesday March 10th. Every bag sold directly benefits our classroom and helps create a supportive, enriching environment where every student can thrive. Our Carnval agenda was packed with fun, learning and Francais. Students spent the week celebrating French culture and traditions, spending time outdoors and connecting with other classes. We had a full day Thursday of a carousel of outdoor activities, all organized by our 7/8s, including sledding, obstacle courses and a hot chocolate stop. The theme this year is, “30 Years of Black History Month: Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations — From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries.” This theme celebrates three decades of Black History Month in Canada and recognizes the enduring legacy of Black Canadians, whose leadership, creativity, innovation and resilience have shaped our past, continue to influence our present, and will inspire future generations.At Henderson, a bulletin board has been created in the Junior Intermediate hallway, featuring prominent black Canadians. Classes have been invited to add to the bulletin board, as a collaborative school-wide effort that features the important learning and work. There will be announcements throughout the month highlighting famous quotes and events by Black Canadians. We also have a second display made by the office in the front hallway. We have already begun to share educational resources that will be featured in classes to spotlight this important event. Lexia Pilot Lexia Reading is a research-based, technology-driven literacy program designed for Pre-K–12 students to develop reading skills through adaptive, personalized learning. It focuses on six areas: phonological awareness, phonics, structural analysis, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Since September, we have been engaging in a Grade 1/2 pilot with Mrs Lloyd's class. We are also delighted to announce that we are engaging in a Grade 3 pilot, starting now, so that every student in Grade 3 at Henderson will be using this fantastic program to close reading gaps (students in French and English classes). We hope to continue to implement this program across different classes.
