2026/27 JR Henderson Weekly Update #5

Hello Henderson Families,
Happy Fall! With a harvest moon on the horizon tomorrow and some cool days ahead, we would like to remind families that morning and afternoon clothing may look different day to day. We always have extra clothes for families in need so if your fall collection is sparce, please reach out!
Orange Shirt Day
As a reminder, Wednesday September 30th, we will honour National Day of Truth and Reconciliation by wearing orange shirts and engaging in school-wide learning, rooted in public commemoration, education, and a commitment to reconciliation. We will also hold assemblies for each division, led by students, to continue our path of education and learning.
Hot Lunch starts next week!
NEW THIS YEAR - Pizza will be served to students on paper plates, not individual boxes.
We will be starting the year with Subs on Tuesdays and Pizza on Thursdays.
Go to https://www.lunchboxorders.net Your login and password would be the same if you participated last year, or go ahead and create one if you didn't. You will have to create your student again and match them to their new teacher.
Orders are due Sunday at noon for the following week.
If buses are cancelled because of the weather, hot lunch will be cancelled as well.

Terry Fox Day Celebrations
This year, our school celebrated Terry Fox Day on Thursday September 24th. Terry Fox was an example of courage, humility, determination, and perseverance. From a young age he exemplified these attributes that made him an inspiration for not only Canada, but the entire world. Our school is grateful for the example of this wonderful Canadian Hero. Soccer Updates
It was a busy and exciting week for JR Henderson soccer players.
Our JR girls and two JR boys soccer teams represented JRH this past Wednesday. All teams showed great school spirit, collaboration and skill! They also showed excellent sportsmanship, resilience, and respect. Great job representing Henderson! - Mme. Mackay, Mrs. Seiveright, and Ms. Caldwell
As well, the Sr. Open team fought hard against tough competition. Way to go, Hawks!
LAST CALL - Read For Fun Sign-up
We're excited to share that registration for the 2026-27 Read for Fun program is open! Families can now complete the registration form to indicate their preferred Read for Fun location and tell them a little bit about their child, including their interests, learning goals, and any areas where they may benefit from additional support. This information will help the educators get to know the learners and make the best possible tutor pairings for the year.

Please complete one form per child you would like to register. Spaces are limited and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis (subject to tutor and location availability). Families may be contacted for additional information or asked to complete a short confirmation form once placements have been finalized.
Learning Commons Week!
What a wonderful way to celebrate literacy, reading and our amazing Learning Commons. The Learning Commons and school were alive with the joy of reading and learning. From bookmark making to staff trivia, many laughs were had.
We would like to take a moment to thank all parents/guardians who volunteered at our book fair. We truly could not have done it without you. Thank you to all families who supported. We have a fantastic community and we truly value the power of teamwork.
Primary Soccer Intramurals
It has been another great week of Primary intramurals! It was great to see so many Grade 1-3 students playing a new sport, creating new friendships and developing their teamwork skills. A shout out to the grade 5/6 students in Mme Martin's and Mme Lieberman's classes for being coaches and refs for the primary soccer games!
Information from Public Health
We are delighted to share information from Southeast Public Health, below. We are always impressed by our Hawk Walkers and look forward to seeing more families take on this October challenge.
Garden Club
Last chance to get involved! On Monday, from 12pm to 1pm, our School Council Eco-Committee and friends will meet out front of the school to pull weeds and tidy the garden. We would LOVE additional parent/guardian helpers so if you're available, please come.

School Council Updates
Our first Council Meeting occurred on Wednesday September 16th. It was great to see new and returning faces!
The next meeting will be held on Wednesday October 14th from 6-8pm. As always, new members are welcome, and childcare is provided.
