Hello Henderson Families,

It was another busy and wonderful week at Henderson. We enjoyed seeing classes in full swing, getting into the groove of learning and re-establishing academic norms.

Safety Week at Henderson
Keeping our students and staff safe is a shared priority at Henderson. As part of Limestone District School Board's emergency preparedness requirements, students participate in regular fire drills and other safety drills throughout the year. Next week, as part of Safety Week, we will be completing all of our required fall drills. These practice opportunities help students and staff learn how to respond calmly, confidently, and safely in the event of an emergency. As well, administration and staff help students understand why these drills occur and how to be safe in school.

Terry Fox is Coming!
As part of our annual tradition, we are again fundraising to help raise money for the Terry Fox Foundation. Our school will celebrate Terry Fox Day on Thursday September 24th. Terry Fox was an example of courage, humility, determination, and perseverance. From a young age he exemplified these attributes that made him an inspiration for not only Canada, but the entire world. Our school is grateful for the example of this wonderful Canadian Hero. We are hoping to raise $3,000 this year in support of this great cause. If you are able to donate to help us achieve our goal, please do:https://schools.terryfox.ca/130759/donate

Learning Commons Week!
If you haven't been, we can certainly assure you that we have an incredibly organized, fun and well-stocked Learning Commons (library). We LOVE to celebrate this space each year so students can learn the joy of reading. Here is the timetable for this fun week:

📚 Learning Commons Volunteers Needed!
Our Learning Commons is always looking for parent volunteers to help keep the space running smoothly! Parent volunteers play an important role in supporting our students and helping with the day-to-day organization. We truly couldn’t run the space as well without your help!

If you have some time to spare and would like to get involved, we would love to have you join us. Please note that all volunteering must take place during regular school hours.

If you’re interested in volunteering or would like more information, please email Hillary Vital at Hillary-jackson@hotmail.com.

Garden Club
Every Monday in September from 12pm to 1pm, our School Council Eco-Committee and friends will meet out front of the school to pull weeds and tidy the garden. We would LOVE additional parent/guardian helpers so if you're available, please come.

Bus Patroller Program Changes
We are once again happy to announce that Henderson will be providing grades 5-8 students with the opportunity to demonstrate school leadership as part of the bus patroller program this year. Students were asked to connect with their bus driver this week if they want to be a bus patroller this year. Due to scheduling changes in the program, we can only offer six spots per bus. Students who have signed up with their bus driver will get an invitation to the training program which will take place on Sept 22nd at the Kingston District Shrine Club from 10-12pm. Permission forms will be sent out through School Day and families will be contacted next week.

THIS WEEK - School Council and Elections
Our first Council Meeting of the year is set for Wednesday September 16th at 6:00pm. Elections will also be held on this day. More info to come next Friday in our newsletter. As always, new members are welcome, and childcare is provided.

Please use this form for nominations if you are interested in being on executive. Nominations are anonymous. Your nomination does not count as a vote; you must be present to vote. Nominations are due by 12:00 noon on Monday, September 15th. For detailed information on each of the elected positions, please see last week's newsletter here.

Read For Fun Is BACK!
We're excited to share that registration for the 2026-27 Read for Fun program is officially open! Families can now complete the registration form to indicate their preferred Read for Fun location and tell them a little bit about their child, including their interests, learning goals, and any areas where they may benefit from additional support. This information will help the educators get to know the learners and make the best possible tutor pairings for the year.

Registration Form: https://forms.gle/nLpN9vYoPGf8v9Hz6

Please complete one form per child you would like to register. Spaces are limited and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis (subject to tutor and location availability). Families may be contacted for additional information or asked to complete a short confirmation form once placements have been finalized.

Open House - Save the Date
We are delighted to announce that we will have our Open House on Thursday September 24th from 5:00pm until 6:30pm - we are looking forward to seeing all of our families and showing off our beautiful school to you! We hope you can join us for a classroom visit.

In-school OT Services Through Kids Inclusive
This year, our school will continue to partner with KidsInclusive to provide Universal Occupational Therapy (OT) support for all students. Occupational Therapists work alongside school staff to share strategies, resources, and tools that support fine motor, gross motor, self-care, and self-regulation skills, helping students participate successfully in classroom and school activities. If a student may benefit from more individualized support, families will be contacted to discuss possible referral options and provide consent. Families with questions or concerns are encouraged to speak with their child's teacher. More information can be found here.

Have a great weekend, Hawks!
