JR Henderson Weekly Update #4

Good afternoon Henderson Families,

Happy Fall! As the leaves begin to turn and the crisp autumn air settles in, we've had a bustling and exciting week here at Henderson! From co-curricular activities to classroom milestones, it's been inspiring to see our students dive into learning with such enthusiasm. Thank you to our staff and families for helping make this season's start so smooth and full of energy.

Learning Commons Week
Our Book Drive was HUGELY successful and we were truly blown away by the generosity of the Henderson community. We should never underestimate the strength and kindness of our students and families. We cannot wait to get these books into circulation and into the hands of our students.

We also are delighted with the Scholastics Book Fair. Your generosity and support will equate to many new books in students' hands. Once we know the total, we will let families know. We raised over $5000 for new books for the school! Way to go Hawks!

Classes also visited the Learning Commons for a presentation about borrowing etiquette and an emphasis about how important the Learning Commons and reading are to our community.

Orange Shirt Day
As a reminder, Tuesday September 30th, we will honour National Day of Truth and Reconciliation by wearing orange shirts and engaging in school-wide learning, rooted in public commemoration, education, and a commitment to reconciliation.

Terry Fox Day
Today is Terry Fox Day! Hawks, you did an amazing job of fundraising. We exceeded our goal! All Hawks also did a walk around the community today, showing our commitment to Terry's cause. Our school is grateful for the example of this wonderful Canadian Hero. This weekend is the last chance to donate: https://schools.terryfox.ca/105464/donate

Hot Lunch starts next week!
We will be starting the year with Subs on Tuesdays and Pizza on Thursdays. Your login and password would be the same if you participated last year, or go ahead and create one if you didn't. You will have to create your student again and match them to their new teacher.
Orders are due Sunday at noon for the following week. Finally, if buses are cancelled because of the weather, hot lunch will be cancelled as well. Questions? Email Mark-  jrhschoolcouncil@gmail.com
Here's the website to get ordering! https://www.lunchboxorders.net

Technology Improvement Plan
We strongly believe that tech should be readily available in all classes. Students continue to regularly use workbooks, paper and writing; however, a mix of both technology and traditional writing methods are required to equip students for high school and beyond. As such, starting in Grade 7/8, we are doing a device rollout, where all older devices are being removed and new ones are being added. All Grade 3+ should be done by the end of October.

New Benches
If you were able to enjoy our field this week, hopefully you noticed our new benches which were provided by our wonderful School Council. Here's some snaps of Hawks enjoying them!

Grade 7/8 Immunization - Date Change
We found out this week that Grade 7/8 immunizations were happening on the same date as the Intermediate Soccer Tournament. As such, Public Health accommodated a date change to Tuesday December 9th.

Data Verification
Data Verification forms will be going home throughout this week and next. Please watch for the forms, complete both sides, sign and send them back to school with your student.
