2026/27 JR Henderson Weekly Update #4
Friday, September 18th, 2026
Hello Henderson Families,
As the cooler weather moves in and the leaves change, we sure feel the quick shift into fall. We are enjoying these sunny days while they last, but always in anticipation for the excitement and learning that the next season will bring. As we cruise into late September, we wish everyone a happy start to the fall.
Safety Week
Keeping our students and staff safe is a shared priority at Henderson. As part of Limestone District School Board's emergency preparedness requirements, students participate in regular fire drills and other safety drills throughout the year. This week, as part of Safety Week, we completed all of our required fall drills. These practice opportunities help students and staff learn how to respond calmly, confidently, and safely in the event of an emergency. As well, administration and staff helped students understand why these drills occur and how to be safe in school. Great job, Hawks!
Hawk Swag!
On Mondays, many staff and students wear yellow and green to show Henderson pride. Interested in getting some swag? See here: https://specialtytrophies.ca/jrhendersonpublicschool/
Terry Fox is Coming!
As part of our annual tradition, we are again fundraising to help raise money for the Terry Fox Foundation. Our school will celebrate Terry Fox Day on Thursday September 24th. Terry Fox was an example of courage, humility, determination, and perseverance. From a young age he exemplified these attributes that made him an inspiration for not only Canada, but the entire world. Our school is grateful for the example of this wonderful Canadian Hero. We are hoping to raise $3,000 this year in support of this great cause. If you are able to donate to help us achieve our goal, please do:https://schools.terryfox.ca/130759/donate
Learning Commons Week!
If you haven't been, we can certainly assure you that we have an incredibly organized, fun and well-stocked Learning Commons (library). We LOVE to celebrate this space each year so students can learn the joy of reading. Here is the timetable for this fun week:
Primary Soccer Intramurals
Primary soccer intramurals began this week! It was great to see so many Grade 1-3 students playing a new sport, creating new friendships and developing their teamwork skills. Soccer intramurals will run for the next 4 weeks at first recess. A shout out to the grade 5/6 students in Mme Martin's and Mme Lieberman's classes for being coaches and refs for the primary soccer games! You are excellent leaders in our school community!
Garden Club
Every Monday in September from 12pm to 1pm, our School Council Eco-Committee and friends will meet out front of the school to pull weeds and tidy the garden. We would LOVE additional parent/guardian helpers so if you're available, please come.
Bus Patroller Program Changes
We are once again happy to announce that Henderson will be providing grades 5-8 students with the opportunity to demonstrate school leadership as part of the bus patroller program this year. Students were asked to connect with their bus driver this week if they want to be a bus patroller this year. Students who have signed up with their bus driver received an invitation to the training program which will take place on Sept 22nd at the Kingston District Shrine Club from 10-12:45pm. Mme Adamson will supervise the trip.
Learning Partner Support
We are beyond delighted that Mme Kaytie Coon will be our Itinerant Math Facilitator and M. Jordan Ingola will be our Learning Partner again for this year. These two Learning Partners will be visiting Henderson weekly to provide instructional support to our team. These fantastic educators fit perfectly within our team and serve as a wealth of knowledge and expertise as our entire teaching team continues to refine and focus our educational priorities.
Additional Resources
We are proud to share many additional resources that we hope would be helpful for educators and families. Please visit the resource section of our website to find caregiver education videos and our resource sites such as the Speech Corner, OT Classroom, and PT Gym. Please continue to visit these sites and share widely amongst staff and families! We welcome any feedback that you may have:https://kidsinclusive.ca/resources/
School Council Updates
Our first Council Meeting occurred on Wednesday September 16th. It was great to see new and returning faces!
The next meeting will be held on Wednesday October 14th from 6-8pm. As always, new members are welcome, and childcare is provided.
Read For Fun Is BACK!
We're excited to share that registration for the 2026-27 Read for Fun program is officially open! Families can now complete the registration form to indicate their preferred Read for Fun location and tell them a little bit about their child, including their interests, learning goals, and any areas where they may benefit from additional support. This information will help the educators get to know the learners and make the best possible tutor pairings for the year.
Registration Form: https://forms.gle/nLpN9vYoPGf8v9Hz6
Please complete one form per child you would like to register. Spaces are limited and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis (subject to tutor and location availability). Families may be contacted for additional information or asked to complete a short confirmation form once placements have been finalized.
Open House - Save the Date
We are delighted to announce that we will have our Open House on Thursday September 24th from 5:00pm until 6:30pm - we are looking forward to seeing all of our families and showing off our beautiful school to you! We hope you can join us for a classroom visit.
Have a great weekend, Hawks!
