Homework Guidelines

Homework is an assigned task that students are asked to complete outside of regular class time.  Homework may be schoolwork not completed in class or may be specifically assigned to consolidate learning or to prepare for a future learning activity.   The amount of homework assigned may vary at various times of the school year and students who are absent may be required to complete work missed at home. The amount of time that students spend on homework depends on a wide range of factors.  A general guideline is:

Grades 1 - 3
10 - 30 minutes
Grades 4 - 6
40 - 60 minutes
Grades 7 - 8
70 - 80 minutes

The completion of homework often takes a team working together:

It Is The Role of The Teacher to:
  • establish clear expectations, instructions, and models for homework assignments
  • provide oral and visual notices of homework (e.g., written on the chalkboard)
  • communicate homework guidelines and completion to students and parents as required
It Is The Role of The Student to:
  • accept responsibility for homework completion to the best of her/his ability
  • manage her/his time carefully
  • submit his/her own work to demonstrate his/her best efforts
  • seek help when it is needed
  • maintain an agenda and keep it in good repair
  • communicate homework guidelines and completion to parents and teachers as required
It Is The Role of The Parent to:
  • provide support and encouragement for homework completion
  • be knowledgeable about their child’s program
  • provide an environment conducive to the completion of homework
  • communicate with teachers regarding your child’s absences and homework expectations
